17. Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999. Some of her top singles include “9 to 5” about empowered women in the workforce. “Coat of Many Colors”, which she has said to be her favorite song, is about how Dolly’s mother had made her a coat from donated rags which was met with laughter and mockery by Dolly’s peers when she had worn it to school. She then goes on to state how being poor is a choice, not in the sense of money, but in a religious and moral sense – people can be rich in love and in spirit. This also is in reference to the Biblical tale of Joseph and his coat of many colors. We can’t forget to mention “Jolene,” a classic song which has been a popular hit ever since it was released in 1974. No wonder she was inducted into the Hall of Fame – and how did it take so long?
